Our Pillars

Innovative and sustainable solutions to agricultural challenges

ADAFAR aims at harnessing the potential of applied research, education, technologies, and innovations to meet high standards of sustainability and profitability while respecting the ecological, economic and social limits that ensure the durability of production:

  • Develop efficient, self-sufficient and economical production systems that provide decent incomes
  • Preserve and protect biodiversity and ecological niches
  • Genetic evaluation and optimize the use of locally adapted genetic resources
  • Manage the quality of the environment
  • Increase energy efficiency in food production and distribution

Evidence-based support for decisions, for policies, investments in agriculture

Agricultural policymakers across Africa face the need for policy options based on evidence-based analysis to promote agricultural transformation for food security, hence the need for rationale

behind proposed spending and the impact of past spending.

ADAFAR aims at lesson-learning from cases studies development to support public and private decisions for policies and investments in African agriculture, and orientation in agricultural educational syllabi to meet the needs and harness opportunities of the agricultural development sector

Capacity development across the agricultural value chains

The aim of the ADAFAR capacity development pillars is to develop the skill sets and capabilities required to promote transformation of agriculture in Africa. It focuses on addressing capacity gaps (knowledge, skills, experience, values, motivations, organizational processes, and linkages) along agricultural value chains to ensure human resources are available to develop solutions to the problems farmer face. This is done through seminars, workshops, webinars and conferences, promotion of field-based demonstrations, innovations platforms and peer to peer learning. This includes knowledge and technology development and their transfer and utilization at the ground level (farmers field schools).

Support agricultural learning institutions and policy makers

The policy in agricultural education and training program provides ideal environment for the impartation of quality knowledge and skills in various fields of agriculture. ADAFAR aims at improving the contributions of university agricultural education and extension institutions to environmental and sustainable development in Agriculture through support to target research, training and development.
